If any of you know me, you know that I am a fan of television. I love stories and I love television shows that tell you a story. I like the shows that you have to watch every week to know what's going on - the shows you have to pay attention to, and the shows that are ultimately leading to a grand finale.
That is why I've recently fell in love with
Supernatural.
For those of you who don't know, Supernatural is a horror/drama show that, at it's core is about two brothers who hunt those things that go boom in the night. It airs Thursday nights on the CW - but I've yet to watch a single episode at that time.
I was turned onto the show last year by a friend of mine who lent me the first three seasons on DVD. I started to watch them and really enjoyed the show, but I kept dragging my feet on watching episodes.
Finally I got some software that allowed me to transfer the DVDs to my iPod Touch - and finished Season 1. I take the train to and from Boston everyday, so my iPod allows me to watch at least one or two episodes a day of some show. I finished Season 1 and then turned my focus towards the first season of True Blood.
I watched the first season of True Blood in about a week (about half the episodes of a Supernatural season) and finally turned my focus back to the Winchester Brothers.
And I have to say, I haven't looked back. I officially became addicted to this show during my watching the second season and, after finishing it, I jumped right into Season 3, which I am in the heart of right now.
Season 3 is shorter (only 16 episodes) because of the writer's strike, so part of me is going to be sad to finish this season so quickly - because I'll then have to wait until September to watch Season 4 (that is when the DVD is released.)
I'll then have 10 days to watch all of Season 4 before the premier of Season 5, and then I'll be watching it with all the other regular viewers.
Now, why do I love this show so much?
First off, the chemistry of the two brothers. There is the younger, more responsible, thoughtful Sam (played by
Jared Padalecki) and the older, brasher, funnier Dean (played by
Jensen Ackles). The fact the actors look nothing alike and are doing unbelievable things - yet make you believe they really are brothers and really are doing the things they do - is a testament to great acting and story telling.
Second - the music. Whoever decided to give this show a kick-ass soundtrack of hard/classic rock was a genius. It fits the style of the characters and the adventures the brothers go on.
Lastly - it's just fun. The one thing that I hate about Heroes is that it seems to take itself way to seriously and doesn't know how to have fun. My favorite show, Lost, on the other hand has great jokes and fun pop-culture moments. Supernatural is no different. The amount of movie references and laugh-out-loud moments, on a show that at it's heart is to be taken seriously, just proves that the people in charge no that making something interesting includes making it entertaining.
Recently, my friend and I finally talked my brother into watching this show. He's somewhere in the middle of Season 1, but he's already told me - he loves it too.
So, if maybe I can get one person who reads this (if anyone actually reads this) to at least give Supernatural a try, then I am satisfied.
You better hurry up though, I hear the plans are for Season 5 to be the last.
